Vinícius Junior was again the target of racist chants during his team’s loss to Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium in Spain’s La Liga. According to the club manager, Carlo Ancelotti this must be removed and he must stop the match.

This match took place on Sunday (21/5/2023) and ended in a 1-0 win for the hosts. Certainly for Vini it was a bad night, as after stoppage time, he excitedly pointed at a fan in the stands for alleged abuse before engaging with fans in that part of the crowd.

La Liga TV broadcasters said there had been an announcement in the stadium asking fans not to insult players or throw objects onto the pitch. The official report also described the racist insult as occurring in the 73rd minute’ shouted at him: ‘Monkey, monkey’ then play was stopped until the announcement was broadcast over the stadium loudspeakers.

The Brazilian was also sent off in the dying minutes of the match for his involvement in an altercation with Valencia’s Hugo Duro. Ancelotti spoke up and conveyed the situation after the game to Movistar Plus saying, “I don’t want to talk about football today. When the whole stadium screams ‘monkey’ at a player and the manager has to think about removing a player because of that, something bad is happening in this league.”

In a separate interview with journalists, Ancelotti suggested that the referee call off the match in another case of racism in the league. The Italian said, “I am very sad because La Liga is a league with big teams with a good atmosphere. We must get rid of this. We are in 2023, racism doesn’t have to exist. The only way for me is to stop the game.”
